MATRIC CAMP

AN INITIATIVE BY WHICH WE ASSIST THE COMMUNITY
We aim to support secondary schools by hosting matric camps for their Grade 12 learners. Between the abundance of traditional ceremonies at the end of the year and family/housing circumstances, life in the village can be chaotic and disruptive.
We host learners in a boarding-school environment for the 4th term, and provide a live-in, study that is conducive to adequate matric exam preparation. Working with school staff, we offer supplemental teaching, expanding opportunities for further education.

Our camps provide intensive teaching and revision, plus a safe, quiet place in which students can focus on their studies. So far participating schools have achieved average matric pass rates of 84% - 88% (up from their normal pass rates of 30-40%).

For example in 2012 (first year), one of our schools had an average pass rate of 35.6% over the previous five years. That year they earned an 87.5% pass rate.

In 2013 (second year), we had a school that joined the camp for the first time. Their pass rate for the previous five years was 80%, 68%, 50%, 27%, 8%. Their 2013 pass rate was 47%, which alone was cause for celebration. Further analysis showed that every student who was in Grade 12 for the first time passed. The students who failed were all in Grade 12 for the second consecutive year. Essentially, giving this school a 100% pass rate.

This is the third year that we are hosting a matric camp. Fifty-three (53) learners from three local secondary schools arrived on our campus on 12 October and will be here until 27 November.

Two of these schools are the ones featured above. We expect that they maintain or improve on last year’s results. The third school has joined us for the first time. This new school has had a declining pass rate 60%, 40%, 20% during the last three years. We hope the camp will get them back on the right track.

How can you help?

BECOME A VOLUNTEER OR MAKE A CONTRIBUTION

We aim to empower and equip the surrounding rural communities by helping people --- one at a time --- to identify their God-given gifts, abilities and passions.
Thus enabling them to impact their own families and communities.
